AUTUMN
BUSINESS LUNCH 2009 UPDATE - Friday 13th November 2009
The Annual Autumn Business Lunch was held
in the Westbury Hotel on Friday 13th November and the event
was, once again, a huge success.
Over 60 past pupils turned up to reunite
with old friends over a delightful lunch and plenty of fine
wine and to listen to the sensible yet understated wisdom
of guest speaker Conor O’Kelly (1977), CEO of NCB Stockbrokers.
Conor’s speech, “The Future ‘Aint
What It Used To Be” focussed on the county’s current
position in the world recession from a market perspective,
and some insight into what Ireland Inc. can expect in the
coming years. Incorporating some interesting and surprising
statistics, his simple, down to earth advice was that everyone
is responsible for their own role in the challenge for recovery,
and unless we stop talking about what everyone else is doing,
we will find it very hard to get back to winning ways.
It was a refreshing, albeit hard hitting,
opinion on a topic that has consumed our lives of late, and
devoid of the egotistical baggage that accompanies almost
all of the “celebrity” commentators that are resonating
in the media of late. Needless to say, the speech was well
received by all attendees.
This year the raffle held at the lunch was
in aid of the benevolent fund, and approximately €1,000
was raised for the fund, which is indicative of the generosity
of our members. The lucky prize-winners were Des Lamont (Wine),
Gavan Barlow (Irl v Aus tickets) and Damien McAughey ( Copy
of “Terenure College – A History: 1860 –
2010”).
After lunch, many members retired to McDaid’s
and the afternoon progressed in fine spirits, as it always
does!!!
Many thanks to the committee for a great
job in organising the event, and we look forward to more of
the same again next year. |
